Reviews
I had just finished running errands I'd been putting off all summer when on the way home I was suddenly hit by a random craving for fried foods but not fried chicken so I was thinking, why not fried pork? Then I started looking up places near me that had chicharron on the menu and Tienda Vieja came up on the search. It's small restaurant on a street corner tucked away in a residential area of Fresh Meadows and I actually drove past it at first because it didn't catch my attention right away. I was surprised that despite it being located in a residential area, I actually wasn't able to find parking in the immediate vicinity... I had to park 2.5 blocks away (which isn't bad either). I went during dinner rush hours but only two tables were occupied and it appears most customers order to-go either by phone or via delivery apps. I ordered at the counter in Spanish and after 15 minutes of awkward waiting in front of the staff, my food was finally ready for pickup. I was still pretty full from a late lunch so all I really wanted was a snack to quell my cravings. In Colombian cuisine, chicharron is typically served as part of a entree like in a Bandeja Paisa/Tipica (what it's called depends on which part of Colombia you're from but both are correct and essentially the same thing) but luckily, I could get it a la carte as an appetizer order for $6 (before tax and tip). The chicharron was as crispy as I liked without being too greasy (sometimes with fried foods you see excess oil but as you can tell by my picture, this was not the case) and it also came with an arepa. The restaurant menu advertises that everything is made with low sodium and that proved to be true with the chicharron. No complaints though - the chicharron was still chicharroning. The arepa was a little thinner than the ones served by other Colombian restaurants but still tasted ok, just a tad cold. Overall, I would probably return to try other stuff on the menu.
I like the food here is close to home also they they a eat in section the decorations is like back in colombia. Food or always good price is reasonable only bad thing is they don't deliver that's a bummer
Delicious Colombian food in Fresh Meadows! You can't go wrong with a Carne Asada, which is seasoned and cooked very well. I would also recommend the combination meat platter. We shared this amongst a group of 8 people along with some other entrées and we had so much left over. The first picture is the platter after we had already eaten 1/3 , forgot to take an initial picture because we were hungry. Then the next picture is the left overs. However, I would have given them 3.5 stars because the price is a bit high and the service is lacking. Nice wait staff, but I had to go up several times to grab utensils/water. But I bumped them up because of their food.
The food is amazing. I'll say the flan is just okay. Def come with a bigger party to share the different types of dishes they have. Their soup was so hearty. The service was kind of slow and it was hard getting the attention of the staff.
